Dr. Hamlin’s Reflection for Sunday, September 05, 2010

“Down, set, hut, hut, hut!”

Well, it’s that time of year again when we will see all the excitement over football.  I recently met with someone from the north who moved to Alabama.  They were welcomed into their new home and asked by a neighbor, “Are you for Alabama or Auburn?”

“Courage Through the Waters”
“Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the LORD your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”
Deuteronomy 31.6

Our Jewish brothers and sisters are faithful in remembering their history and God's promises to them.  They read and study it diligently.  It is written down and passed from one generation to the next.  At the core of that teaching is God's faithful promise to go with them and never to leave or forsake them.

“There is neither Jew nor Greek, slave nor free, male nor
female, for you are all one in Christ Jesus.”                                                                           ~Paul, Galatians 3.28 (NIV)

I watched the movie, The Great Debaters, when it came out in 2007 and again this past Sunday.  BET is featuring the movie and I encourage everyone to watch it or rent it.

Tolson (played by Denzel Washington and also starring Forest Whitaker as Dr. James Farmer, Sr.), who taught English and Drama at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and is credited in creating the college’s debate team that broke racial barriers and successfully defeated the team at the University of Southern California (in the movie it’s Harvard University).

Pay Attention!

“Pay attention and listen to the sayings of the wise; apply your heart to what I teach, for it is pleasing when you keep them in your heart and have all of them ready on your lips.”
Proverbs 22.17-18

I had the greatest appreciation for all my teachers – elementary, junior and senior high, college, and graduate (seminary) school. They all taught me something and I am a better person because of them. Even the ones I did not particularly like, they had something that I needed and it was important to hunker down, pay attention, ask questions, and get what they had to offer.

Jesus Saves...You Can Too

When I was home a few days ago, I drove by the old Price Library, now being used by the City of Macon for another purpose. It was at Price Library that I developed a passion for books and reading. Next to the library was a community meeting room and the swimming pool that serviced our community. It was there that I learned how to swim and was certified as a lifeguard.
